Suu Kyi and the army chief in Malaysia began trial in Malaysia

The trial began in an international public hearing in Myanmar against Myanmar State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi and other officials including the army chief on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. The verdict will be pronounced on Friday.

The hearing began in the court of the Gentlemen’s People’s Tribunal (PPT) in Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur on Monday. A panel of internationally renowned experts took part in the hearing held at the Faculty of Law of the University of Kuala Lumpur.
In this, Professor Gregory Stanton of the University of Masseside Studies and Prevention, George Masson, gave the confessional statement. He said that Myanmar’s military, police, other Buddhist militias and the current civilian government are accused of crimes against humanity and genocide.

Regarding Rohingyas, he said that they are victims of deprivation and discrimination in all parts of Myanmar. Bangladesh Human Rights Commission Chairman Kazi Riazul Haque also participated in the hearing.

Today the tribunal will present evidence of Muslim persecution in Myanmar. After the closing verdict on behalf of the prosecution in the afternoon, the defendant will make the statement.

Thursday’s Judicial Council will present their statement. Eight-member judges panel has specialized lawyers and lawyers involved in the International Criminal Investigation

Chandra Muzaffar, president of the PPT Malaysian Branch, said that in the five-day session, the judges will analyze the prosecution arguments, the opinion of expert witnesses, confessional statement of victims. The verdict will be pronounced at 10 am local time on Friday. The judges’ judgment will be sent to Geneva, to the UN Human Rights Council, to various international organizations and groups.
